AARON FREEMAN (GENE WEEN) FORMS NEW BAND

Aaron Freeman, aka Gene Ween, who recently departed Ween, has announced the formation of a new band, FREEMAN, the July 22 release of a new album, also titled “FREEMAN,” on Partisan Records, and this week leaked a song from it, “(For A While) I Couldn’t Play Guitar Like A Man,” via Jack Black’s Facebook page.  (You can listen to the track below.)

“FREEMAN” is the singer/guitarist’s first album or original material since disbanding Ween and he got sober.

“There was so much of ‘Aaron had to break up Ween because of addiction’ and ‘Aaron broke up Ween in order to pursue his solo work,’ ” he says in a press release.  “But I broke up Ween because we were at a creative dead end way before our last record, ‘La Cucaracha.’  Basically we were going through the motions, becoming a showcase band.”

The band includes Chris Boerner (guitar), Dave Godowsky (keys) and Kyle Keegan (drums).  Brad Cook played bass on the album, while Joe Young will handle bass duties on tour.  The group has four dates scheduled:  July 22 at Mercury Lounge in New York, July 23 at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn, Sept. 5 at the Hopscotch Festival in Raleigh, N.C., and Sept. 6 at the Lockn’ Festibal in Arrington, Va.
