Big Star’s “Third” album will be re-released, yet again, as “Complete Third” on Oct. 14. While various demos and alternate mixes of certain tracks have been released, “all extant recordings made for the famed album are presented for the first time” on the upcoming version on Omnivore Recordings.
The 69 tracks on “Complete Third” include 20 previously unheard recordings, demos and alternate mixes made by producer Jim Dickinson and engineer John Fry. “Third” was initially released in 1978.
The collection will first be released as a 3-CD box set and digitally, “with three separate double LPs to follow at a later date, each vinyl volume representing a CD in the boxed set,” according to a press release.
Besides the main essay by journalist and A&R exec Bud Scoppa, liner notes will be included from the following authors: ody Stephens (Big Star), Mary Lindsay Dickinson (widow of producer Jim Dickinson), Mitch Easter (Let’s Active),Adam Hill (Ardent staff producer), Elizabeth A.
