In a media meet and greet at Philadelphia’s North Bowl Lounge N’ Lanes last night, organizers of the 50th installment of the venerable Philadelphia Folk Festival announced the initial lineup of the event, which will be held Aug. 19, 20 and 21 at Old Pool Farmin Upper Salford Twp., near Schwenksville.
That lineup includes Arlo Guthrie, the David Bromberg Big Band, Jorma Kaukonen, Justin Townes Earle, The Campbell Brothers, The Kennedys, Angel Band, the Joel Plaskett Emergency, The Wood Brothers, Tom Paxton, Tom Rush and a host of others — and more to be announced. An artist with whom we were not familiar until this announcement but are now pretty psyched about it is the Joel Plaskett Emergency. Check out this video for Plaskett’s “Fashionable People” to see and hear why.

Organizers advise attendees to “expect the unexpected,” noting that a theme of collaboration will run throughout the festival. In a press release, they teased:
What if Arlo Guthrie is backed up by the David Bromberg Big Band? Perhaps Jorma Kaukonen and Roy Book Binder will discuss the impact and play the music of the Reverend Gary Davis. Or, maybe Tom Rush, Tom Paxton and David Amram will perform together. Dala, Madison Violet and The Battlefield Band could discuss and perform Atlantic Celtic fiddle songs. How about Sunday Morning Gospel with the Campbell Brothers’ Sacred Steel? Or, Kim & Reggie Harris, The Kennedys and David Bromberg & Nancy Josephson could present a song workshop as husband and wife teams?
Individual daily tickets start at $46, including the 20 percent Early Bird Discount, or you can attend for all three days for $110 — add tent camping, and you get an additional concert on Thursday night for $150 total.
