When we ask Kat Von D how she feels about fans being skeptical when an artist tries something outside of their established genre, she cuts us off.
“They should be,” she says.
Von D is a classically trained pianist and self-proclaimed metalhead. But she’s known for starring in the reality show “LA Ink,” her tattoo work and her makeup line. She says celebrities often slap their name on an album or something else out of their usual lane without much thought and effort. With her debut album, last year’s “Love Made Me Do It,” she invited her band members to move into her home to work on the record and sold her makeup line so she could focus on her music. She hopes that dedication comes through when people listen to the album or attend one of her shows, including a March 3 stop at Gramercy Theatre.
Below, you can view our chat with Von D about her darkwave album, working with guest musicians like Dave Grohl, TV On The Radio’s Dave Sitek and Bauhaus’ Peter Murphy and what her tour, which kicks off Feb. 28 in Pittsburgh, will sound and look like.
