JOHN PETRUCCI DISCUSSES SOLO TOUR WITH MIKE PORTNOY AND THE STATE OF PROG METAL

John Petrucci’s fall trek is being billed as a solo tour, but it’s much more like a working family vacation. The Dream Theater guitarist has enlisted DT founding member Mike Portnoy on drums, big news in the progressive world because Portnoy left DT all the way back in 2010. And the opening act? None other than the reunited Meanstreak, which features the wives of Petrucci, Portnoy and DT bassist John Myung.

Petrucci’s output inside and out of DT, arguably the genre’s most important band, makes him one of the key figures in the progressive metal world. In advance of his shows at Town Hall in New York City on Oct. 13 and the Keswick Theatre on Oct. 14, we recently caught up with the virtuoso from his home in Long Island to talk about working with Portnoy, his Grammy speech earlier this year (DT won Best Metal Performance) and new material from Dream Theater. You can watch our conversation below.
